Amber Light Bars: How to Choose Length, Mounting, and Flash Pattern for Work Trucks

2026-10-06

An amber light bar is the hardest part of a work truck to buy from a photograph. Two bars that look identical online can differ in beam geometry, flash control, voltage tolerance, and the length that actually fits the vehicle. The result is a return, a fleet of bars that behave differently on different vehicles, or a product that cannot be cleared for the market it was sold into.

Four decisions determine whether an amber bar works: length, mounting, electrical fit, and control.

What Amber Warning Lights Are For

Amber is the hazard and work-zone colour in most markets. It identifies vehicles and situations that need to be seen rather than obeyed: tow and recovery trucks, construction and road maintenance, utility and municipal vehicles, snow removal, waste collection, curbside delivery vehicles, and pilot or escort vehicles travelling with abnormal loads.

Which colours a vehicle may display, and in what combination, is set by the regulations of each market — not by the manufacturer. Confirm the permitted configuration for your market before specifying.

Decision 1: Length

Length should follow the vehicle, not the catalogue. The bar must span the working width of the mounting surface without overhanging the vehicle outline or blocking the roof.

Market conventions:

Compact roofs — 10" to 12" bars, or mini and dash/deck units

Pickups, vans, utility vehicles — 32" to 40" bars

Full-width truck roofs — 48" and above, including full-size bars

One platform rarely covers a mixed fleet, which is why length range matters: the Liyi 39000 series is produced in 17 lengths, while the 61000, 62000, and 63000 series cover 500mm to 2200mm.

Decision 2: Mounting

Roof bracket (permanent) — most stable, cleanest cable routing, needs fixtures or drilling

Magnetic — deploys in seconds, moves between vehicles; suited to volunteer, hire, and escort fleets

Rear window / interior — used where roof mounting is impractical; lower viewing angle

Dashboard / dash-deck — smallest units, usually a secondary light

Decision 3: Electrical Fit

Fleets mixing 12V and 24V vehicles should specify wide-input products covering both — 9V to 30V is the common range. Confirm current draw and fuse rating for the length ordered, and confirm the cable length suits the installation: cable length is part of the configuration that was tested.

Decision 4: Control and Flash Pattern

Flash rate and pattern are functional, not cosmetic. Patterns typically operate between 2Hz and 4Hz, and directional (arrow) functions need separate control channels. For European markets, ECE R65 sets the optical requirements and ECE R10 covers electromagnetic compatibility, so the bar does not disturb radio, positioning, or vehicle electronics.

What to Send in a Quote Request

Seven lines produce a usable quotation the first time:

Bar length (inches or mm) plus vehicle make/model or roof width

Mounting type (roof bracket, magnetic, rear window, dash)

LED colour configuration

Vehicle voltage (12V, 24V, or mixed)

Flash pattern, and whether directional control is required

Target market — so the correct approval is quoted

Quantity, and whether custom packaging or branding is needed

FAQ

Q: How do I know which length amber light bar fits my vehicle?

A: Measure the usable roof width, then choose the nearest standard length that spans it without overhanging. For mixed fleets, ask for the full length list — a range produced in many lengths usually covers several vehicle types from one part family.

Q: Can the same amber bar run on both 12V and 24V vehicles?

A: Where the product has a wide input range — commonly 9V to 30V — yes. Confirm the range and the fuse rating for the length you order.

Q: Do amber light bars need certification?

A: It depends on the market. Where approval for warning lamps is required, it applies to the specific model and length tested, so the certificate must be checked against the exact configuration you order.

Before you order, confirm length, mounting, voltage, pattern, and the approval your market requires — and ask for the certificate covering the exact model. LIYI provides specifications and approvals on request.
